Arts In Nature Festival

Redwood Regional Park, Oakland California

I began and ended this piece farther up the trail than the festival, wanting to commence and conclude only the forest and to make entering and exiting the festival grounds a part of the piece.

I was wearing my tiny eyes costume, black pants, white shirt and white shoes, with the blue water bottle on my belt. I also had the earth bowl around my neck on a rope. I had four feathers in my hair, black, white, blue and orange, matching my clothing, bottle and the orange covering on the outside of the earth bowl. I also attached two rattles and four goat bells to my belt so that my movements would be augmented in sound beyond my body and voice and would announce my presence to those to whom I would be out of sight.

I focused on the environment as a stimulus to the ecstatic response as I passed through the forest to the festival area, being well activated by the time I arrived. I then included the participants of the festival into my focus as I came into the crowds. I also looked into the earth bowl to stimulate me when needed. My trajectory was down the redwood covered trail, which was about a half mile, and back up again. I would continue the surrender, staying in a spot when the response was strong and continuing forward when it subsided, sometimes back tracking for a bit when following the surrender.

At certain spots on the side of the trail where the earth looked soft I would stop to dig a small hole in the ground and collecting the earth into a mound directly behind it. I did this rather fervently, to my surprise. Then I would look into the hole to elicit the ecstatic response, which in these cases is rather considerable. I would stand peering into the earth while my entire body was shaking from the ecstatic response. At some points I took the orange and blue feathers from my hair, one in each hand, and would move with them, pointing them into the earth bowl and then upwards, and moving spontaneously with them.

At a designated spot I started to elicit as fully as I could, shaking and moving very intensely. A crowd started to gather as a result of the activity. After a bit of movement I dug a hole and bulit a mound on both sides of the trail, peering into it them and elciting the response. Three curious boys at this time started to follow my every step closely and I moved about. I also held colored the feathers here too, sometimes placing and leaving them into the earth bowl as I moved. Eventually I took the orange and blue feathers and stuck them into the mound of earth, marking it for the event that took place there.

There were some some unexpected and unplanned events that took place, including finding feathers which I then put in my hair, giving a boy a piece of wood directly taken from the ground, having someone put a feather into the earth bowl, and other interactions with curious participants including concentrated and deep focus on them with an intense ecstatic response while they returned the gaze.

Lastly I then continued back up the trail and away fro the festival ground to end the piece alone in the forest. The entire piece lasted about three hours.
